Ingrown toenails are a common problem that can be treated, and should not be ignored. They can be extremely painful which may restrict your activities and footwear choices. 
This condition should be treated immediately as it may result in an infection.

Some facts about ingrown toenails:

  1. Ingrown toenails can occur for any number of reasons, including ill-fitting footwear, external trauma, hereditary predisposition or ineffective nail trimming.
  2. Ingrown toenails will look inflamed, swollen and be tender to the touch.
  3. Prior to your appointment, it is advised to keep the ingrown toenail clean, with daily warm salty foot baths. Savlon Cream or Betadine can be applied to the area, if an allergy is not indicated.
  4. This condition can occur at any time to people of all ages.

Treatment of ingrown toenails:

On examination, initial treatment could include temporary relief of discomfort, and in some instances, advice to proceed with a course of antibiotics (as prescribed by your GP).
Depending on the severity of the condition, a more permanent solution may be necessary. The offending section of nail is surgically removed under local anaesthetic. Afterwards, the nail bed is treated with an application of Phenol. 
After the surgery is completed, the patient is provided with comprehensive post-operative instructions and dressings Post-operative appointments are also included in the procedure.
